Sheet 02 · Reliability and fuel

Catch the failure before it has a name.

Trends, test reports and measurements read together, so a rising exhaust spread or a poor fuel report becomes a planned job and not a breakdown.

02 · Fuel diagnostics

From sample bottle to engine response

Fuel diagnostics tie the bunker delivery note and the test report to what the engine does next: injector wear, purifier sludge, filter changes and cylinder condition. Poor fuel is cheaper to catch at the report than at the liner.

Fuel and emissions data also feed IMO DCS, SEEMP Part III and CII, all referenced on the technical management page.

03 · Diagnostic route

Five steps from symptom to fix

  1. REV A

    Observe

A reading drifts, an alarm repeats, a filter clogs early.

  2. REV B

    Collect

Records, trends, samples and test reports in one place.

  3. REV C

    Diagnose

Cause narrowed with the maker’s guidance and past data.

  4. REV D

    Correct

Parts ordered, squad booked, job done in the right window.

  5. REV E

    Verify

Readings compared after the fix to confirm the result.

Where to look first

General first checks only. The maker’s manual and your superintendent decide the real diagnosis.

05 · Overhaul

When a part needs hands

A diagnosis often ends with a turbocharger, pump or generator overhaul. A riding squad can board and do it, with spares sourced in parallel through Nanak Ship Management procurement.

06 · FAQ

Reliability and fuel questions

Open a line to read the answer.

Machinery reliability work uses records, trends and inspections to find a failing component early, then plans the repair for a convenient time. It replaces surprise breakdowns with planned jobs. The approach sits within Nanak Ship Management technical management.

Fuel diagnostics compare fuel test reports and bunker data with how the engine actually behaves, so poor fuel quality is caught before it damages injectors, liners or turbochargers. Nanak Ship Management lists fuel diagnostics in its technical management service.

Keep running hours per machinery item, overdue job lists, lube oil analysis results, exhaust temperatures, vibration or bearing readings and fuel test reports. Trends matter more than single readings. Our self-check on this page lists ten habits, and the Nanak services page shows where we can assist.

Yes, fuel consumption data feeds IMO DCS reporting, SEEMP Part III and the CII rating, so accurate fuel records matter beyond the engine room. Nanak Ship Management references all of these in its technical management scope.

Yes. When diagnostics point to a turbocharger, pump, switchboard or pipework fault, a riding repair squad can board at anchor or en route to carry out the work. Squads are described on the Nanak Ship Management services page and on our riding squads page.

Yes, because reliable machinery depends on people who read the signs. NSI-003 Engine Room Resource Management and NSI-009 Advanced Automation & Control Engineering are featured courses at the Nanak Shipping Institute, listed on its featured courses page.
